What is Alkalinity?

Why should you familiarize yourself with alkalinity and it’s importance to your tank?

Alkalinity is a good measure of how to resist a dip in your pH but is can also be used to measure the opposite: resisting and uptick in pH. This is referred to as the “buffering”.

Alkalinity is a measure of the pH buffering capacity of water. Alkalinity provides a consistent and steady pH for aquariums.  You will need a solid and consistent pH in order for proper aquarium health.

If the alkalinity is higher, the system has a better chance to absorb additional acid or something that has an effect on the pH. Be sure to test your water regularly and reach out to The Fish Reef if you have additional questions or concerns so we can help!
